The Shin Splints are the most common injury for

runners. They can be caused by overuse, improper

training or even just poor shoe fit. The shin splints will

usually go away after a few weeks of rest but if you

have them often it may mean that your running form

needs some work.


Shin splints are a painful condition that occurs when the muscles in your lower leg

become inflamed. They're often caused by overuse injuries, so try to keep your running

mileage under control.


Types of Shin Splints


There are two main types of shin splints: tibial stress syndrome (TBSS) and medial tibial

stress syndrome. TBSS is more common than MTSS, and it's caused by repetitive strain

on the muscles in your shins. It typically affects people who run at high speeds and/or do

lots of interval workouts.


Prevention


If you're having shin splints, try these prevention tips:

1. Warm up properly before running.

2. Wear proper shoes.

3. Stretch out your legs before running.

4. Don't wear heels when running.

5. Avoid wearing tight shorts or pants.

6. Run slowly at first.

7. Do not push yourself too hard.

8. Take breaks every 20 minutes.

9. Drink plenty of water.

10. Get regular medical care.

based on the severity of the condition.

Causes of Shin Splints

Overuse injuries such as shin splints are typically caused by repetitive stress on the

muscles and tendons in the lower leg. This can occur when a runner does not warm up

properly before a run, runs too fast, or runs with shoes that do not provide adequate

support.

Prevention Tips

If you are prone to shin splints, there are several things you can do to prevent them.

First, make sure that you are warming up properly before each run. You should also try

to find a pair of shoes that provides good arch support and cushioning. Finally, you

should stretch out your calf muscles at least once per week.
