What Is Myofascial Release?
Myofascial therapy is a type of manual therapy that uses gentle stretches to help reduce muscle spasms and restore normal function. It works by releasing trigger points (areas where there is an abnormal buildup of tissue) that cause pain and stiffness. Trigger points are often found along the spine, in the shoulders, hips, knees, ankles, wrists, elbows, hands, and feet.
Myofascial releases are commonly performed using a foam roller, massage stick, tennis ball, or other tools. A therapist will use these tools to apply pressure to the muscles and fascia (the connective tissues surrounding muscles). This helps to break up adhesions (abnormal bands of fibrous tissue), improve circulation, and relax tight muscles.
There are two main types of myofascial release therapy: passive and active. Passive myofascial release involves applying firm pressure with a tool to the muscle while the patient is lying down. Active myofascial release requires the patient to actively move the body part being treated.
Myofascial tissue is made up of fascia, connective tissues, muscles, tendons, ligaments, and nerves. Fascia is a thin layer of dense fibrous tissue that surrounds muscles and other soft tissues. It provides support and helps keep organs and bones in place. Connective tissues provide structure and strength to the body. Muscles contract and relax to help us perform everyday tasks. Tendons connect muscles to bone. Ligaments hold joints together. Nerves carry messages between the brain and the rest of the body.
Myofascial therapy uses gentle pressure to break down scar tissue and adhesions (connective tissue) that form when muscles are injured. This allows the muscle to move freely again. In addition, myofascial therapy helps improve circulation, reduce inflammation, and relieve tension.
